Before entering this class, I had never really understood blogging. Even though I was familiar with Kathy Cassidy’s Classroom Blog, the entire concept was still a blur. There are many things throughout the course of this class that I have come to know and love. Never before have I heard about free blog programs, Google Reader, blip.tv, SlideShare, and everything else that I have commented upon gradually through my blogs. And never before have I thought that I would be a computer freak!
I really do enjoy blogging and reading other people’s blogs as well. But I’ve realized that blogging does take a lot of time and work. I really only post blogs that interest me and I only read blogs that seem interesting to me. My favourite piece that I have blogged about would have to be ‘8 Irresistible Principles of Fun’ which was a reply to Vicki Davis’ post. I wanted to write about my feelings towards the slide show she presented and it was simply a subject that really encouraged me to write. Other favourites include ‘The Progression of Computers’ and ‘Wiki Fun’. Those blogs are also personal and almost promoting something that I love. Those are my favourite kind of blogs…where I can just brag or say what I want to say!
Perceptions about blogging have definitely changed. I don’t really know what the purpose of blogging is but I see it as a way to communicate. It definitely reminds me of a journal or diary that one hand writes except we don’t hand write, we type onto the computer. As computers and technology become more of a daily part of our lives, I think blogging in the classroom is very important. There are always journals being done in class, so why not switch from paper to computer? I would absolutely recommend blogging in classrooms. Of course it would be a process to teach how to blog but it would be such a great learning experience and fulfillment for the teacher, student, and reader. When I was responding to the blogs of students from Kathy Cassidy’s classroom, I enjoyed reading the children’s thoughts. I recognized then that blogs don’t just have to be text either. The students even used video, drawings, and pod casts. Blogging would be such a benefit to any classroom and plus, the students would really enjoy it.
As I said before, I post blogs that are of interest to me and read ones that interest me as well. For this class, I have read many great blogs from my fellow classmates and sometimes I wonder how they have such insightful thoughts! I also wonder where they find the topics they blog about. I have to dig and read and link to find a blog or topic that I like. I like to comment on other’s blogs because I usually agree or have something to say after I read their thoughts on the subject. I find myself reading blogs then commenting with a compliment or suggestion. My best comment was to someone in this class. I don’t remember the name but it was about adding media to our blog posts. It was my favourite comment because I felt like I was really helping her figure out how to add media. I also felt like I was comfortable enough to give instructions for something that I myself have only been doing for 6 weeks. I remember after that comment, I was smiling because I had just figured out to add media so telling someone else how to was a lot of fun!
Blogging has a different meaning to me after this class. I appreciate the social networking that it brings. I didn’t know that linking other people’s pages brings readers in. I also find it exhilarating when someone I don’t know comments on my blog or seeing on ClusterMaps who has visited. It’s a weird feeling to know that there are various people reading what I have to say. There’s so much that I have learned from this class and as I’ve stated in another post of mine, I know blogging will be a definite routine that will remain constant in my life.
To Alec and my ECMP classmates, I wish you well and thank you for all of your insightful words. Hopefully this wonderful thing called technology will reunite us again in the future!
